As recorded on Live at Catalina’s, Vol. 1 and Junk Wagon: The Big Band Album, Don’t Jive the Hitman is a swingy, bluesy, hipster-spy piece built on a blues bass line groove in 7/4. The inspiration for the title came from a day’s long journey of collecting some money that was owed. There are solos in the guitar and alto saxophone before a trumpet solo begins in a new key, softly and sparsely. The solo is accompanied by a seamlessly steady layering of instruments and colors, arriving at an intricate and powerful out-chorus (inspired by The Police’s, Synchronicity I). It has proven to be an effective closer.
