Oma (Charts) - John Daversa
As recorded on Live at Catalina’s, Vol. 1, Oma is a melodic jazz bossa nova (inspired by Henry Mancini’s, Moon River) that features a soprano saxophone solo throughout. It is a dedication to women, mothers, and the divine feminine. It highlights traditional bossa nova accompaniment by the guitar, as well as sweeping counter melodies and duck-tailing lyrical lines within the wind sections. The ending is a large-scale, vamping crescendo and decrescendo, utilizing steady building and deconstruction of layers, over a rising four-bar vamp (inspired by Stevie Wonder’s, As) that the soloist improvises over. This is a wonderful improvisational vehicle for an improvising soprano saxophonist.
